Gonna miss Glee 'til it comes back in November! It's been so nice coming home to it after my busiest day of class every week. To mourn its absence and pay tribute to its delightful, well-dressed cast of characters, I am breaking with tradition and starting a Theme Week on Wednesday rather than Sunday. Welcome to the Week of Glee.

Super Skinny Jean, Dark Ink Wash - American Eagle

These jeans are marvelous. I bought a pair about two weeks ago and I can't stop wearing them. American Eagle's jeans are generally very comfortable, and seem to be quite well made (for instance, I've never had AE jeans wear through at the thigh like with other brands)... My only beef with them is that sometimes they also look kind of thick when they're on, so they aren't the most flattering to your legs.

But these are different. At first, when the girl in the store suggested the "super skinny jean," I was skeptical. Wary, even. But I really liked the "dark ink wash", and they didnt have my size for it in the normal skinny. Only the super skinny. So, I shrugged my shoulders and took them to the dressing room... and thus began a beautiful friendship. I guess it makes sense, that for a place where the jeans look kind of thick, you'd want to go for the most streamlined cut they offer. Mmmm I love them. $40 is more than I usually spend on jeans, but it's looking like I'm gonna get a whole lot of mileage out of them, so I think it's justified.

This is Disney's animated short of the piece, which came out 10 years later in 1946. (I'm pretty sure the narrator they got is also the voice actor for Winnie the Pooh. Sure sounds like it.) H81 Girls Gossiping Tee - Heritage1981

Hee. I was pleasantly surprised by this in the New Arrivals on Forever 21's website; it had a retro-kitsch cleverness to it that seemed out of place. Then I realized it was part of the H81 line, and it all made sense. Heritage 1981 is a branch of F21, which began as a clothing line I guess, and is now slowly emerging as a chain of stores. I am fortunate enough to have one at a nearby mall here in DC. In terms of style, Heritage 1981 is basically Forever 21 brought down to earth. The clothes are more lo-fi and chill, but still fall into current trends and are Hip and With It. Forever 21 is a very bright store, white walls, clothes booming with bright colors. Walk into an Heritage1981 and you'll find more wood than white, normal lights, normal or earthy tones for the clothes with the occasional pop of brightness on a boho silk sundress or a knit. You get the idea.

Commercially, I'm sure they're targeting the high school girls who shy away from glossy clubwear and instead get their pride from being into The Beatles, recycling their plastics, reading recreationally and being into other "nerdy" things. It's modeled to be the Stereotypical Indie-Alt Girl's answer to F21. There are a lot of those girls. I expect the stores to do well. Of course, it's also an answer for any kind of girl who just has a more mellow sense of style and wants to dress cute for cheap. If you can't tell by now, it's one of my favorite places to shop. GO IN if you ever come across one!

Now, I love Modcloth. I do. It's one of my favorite stores. But they sure do get away with some puffed-up prices...

Saw a dress at Forever 21 a couple weeks ago:

The price? $22.80. Not too bad, it's a pretty nice, flouncy cut. If it were in a different color (that pink doesn't work well on me), then I'd definitely be interested. Regardless, it's a memorable enough look that it stuck in my mind... so when I was browsing through Modcloth's dresses this afternoon, and saw this item a few pages in:

Pomegranate Dress - Modcloth

...there was a Moment of Recognition.

Their price? $49.99.

Mmmmmmhm.

It's definitely the same dress; I checked the descriptions on both sites, and they have the same composition (97% cotton, 3% spandex).

Now, like I said, I do actually love Modcloth, so maybe I'd let this slide without saying anything... except that this is actually the THIRD time I've seen this ripoff phenomenon with an identical item between Modcloth.com and a cheaper place's site, like F21 or Wetseal. The first two times were just before I started this blog. (Isn't it nice to share things!)

So what gives, Modcloth? Where do you get off selling F21-grade products at Urban Outfitters prices? And no offense to F21, I shop there a lot -- but anyone who DOES shop there knows that their clothes are not generally well-made, durable, high-quality wares. They're the economical option for decent fashion. Selling the same stuff that you'd find at F21 or Wetseal at double the price is like smuggling a Whopper into a nice sit-down restaurant and selling it as a $15 burger.

Thing is, people will buy that jacked-up, overpriced cheapo burger. Why? Because the nice, sit-down restaurant has Atmosphere, and it's the Atmosphere that's convincing. A customer walks in, checks out the nice look of things, checks out the $7-50 menu range... and thinks, "hey, this is a fairly nice place. Their food must be pretty good!" Likewise, Modcloth can get away with selling cheap clothes at heightened prices because so many people find their site, see the nice layout and the $25-150 dollar price range on the sleekly-photographed apparel, the $40-150 dresses... and go "hey, this is a fairly nice place. Their clothes must be pretty good!"In short, if a product is in a surrounding context of good quality, and is promoted like it's quality, then people will believe it's quality. So they'll pay more for it. Business.

And wouldn't you know, the "Pomegranate Dress" is completely out of stock at Modcloth right now. But if you like it, hey, why not click back over to Forever 21 and buy it for $25 less? They're out of pink too, but they also offer it in orange.

So my lovely mother scored a free copy of the September issue of VOGUE from her workplace... And I was just noticing a couple things as I paged through.

First:

Fantastic pair of jeans in a new ad for Hudson... very artistically destroyed, with the key being the Union Jack underlayer. I have been googling trying to hunt these down for sale, but all for naught. I hope they are released as an actual buyable item eventually, even if it's at a ludicrous price.

Obviously I can't move on from these without noting the HAIR "Manchester England" connection, a song I featured in a very recent entry! I'm sure a real-life, modern-day Claude would flip out if he came across this ad. But then, so would Mr. Neil WOOF Donovan... to make things more uncanny, the model wearing the jeans is none other than Georgia May Jagger, daughter of Micky Mick, Micky Jag himself.

The other night, I went to a restaurant that played a silent film projection for its customers on the front wall ("The Cameraman" with Buster Keaton). The whole time I was salivating over not only my delicious meal, but also every dress and every hat worn by the lead actress, Marceline Day.

Sorry if this entry comes out weird-looking, I'm on a strange unfamiliar laptop and the images are pasting wonky! Anyway. One of the neatest things about rompers is that sometimes, they look exactly, unimpeachably like dresses....except if you do a pratfall, or sprawl out on the grass, then SURPRISE there's a secret pair of shorts underneath and you don't gotta flash nobody! Vintage 80s charcoal black mini romper - NodtoModvintage on Etsy

Tiny people, look alive - this S/XS romper could be your new wardrobe staple. Though it's not *quite* as versatile as the dress desgined by Eliza Starbuck for The Uniform Project (can't wear it open, can't turn it around), it's definitely in the same neighborhood. Classy enough to wear to formal occasions, but also casual enough for a regular day, this romper could be the base for any kind of look depending on how it's accessorized, or even layered with other clothes. What's more, it's the only romper so far that I could seriously see someone wearing in any season of the year, even winter - just add stockings, ankle boots and a jacket or cardigan ((plus a real coat for outside)), and maybe a belt at the waist. I'm normally staunchly opposed to wearing shorts with tights, but the cut of this is dress-like enough that I'd make a personal exception. I can't lie, if this one was my size I'd be all over it. It makes me think of old movies and jazz, Audrey Hepburn and Duke Ellington.

And thank you, last.fm and Mr. Combe (apparently a very popular children's songwriter in Australia), for this equally jaunty, whistle-ridden skip-a-long song. One could wear the romper above and play this on their ipod as they stroll down a 1950's technicolor cartoon road, where the sun smiles wide and the birds, flowers, squirrels and evidently wheelbarrows all have rosy cheeks and eyes the size of dinner plates.

Less than a week ago I ordered this necklace:

And it arrived in the mail very promptly, on Wednesday, and it is wonderful. I definitely recommend this shop - the necklaces are expensive ($35), but this is one impulse buy I definitely don't regret. It is too cute to regret. She does different kinds of animals, too, and does take custom orders: motleymutton.etsy.com

I have named the small vulpine sir "Gregory." He is my new friend. I love wearing this because every time I put it on, I feel like I am bringing a little companion along on my day-to-day adventures, which from his point of view is a combination of a field trip and one of those flying-chair rides at amusement parks. The commute to work seems a lot more exciting when thinking of it as seen through those itty-bitty black-bead fox eyes.

Superheroes Polaroid Necklace - jerseymaids on Etsy

I really like all of Lauren Beacham (jerseymaids)'s polaroid jewelry. It's a nice concept, and I think her pieces come out looking sweetly crafty. My personal favorite of the current stock might be the simple Bokeh Village necklace, but I chose to feature "Superheroes" instead BECAUSE

1) I like it; out of the whole selection, I think this picture might be the most immediately intriguing, forgoing the prettiness of the nature shots for an image that seems to have more of a story to it. It reminds me a bit of how photography is used in A Softer World.

Spring Awakening 2001 Workshop - There Once Was a Pirate

My head's full of Spring Awakening today, and I'd been planning to work this entry into this Beach Week thing I'm doing anyway, so here you are. This is an early song that I think was still in the off-Broadway production of SA, but it was taken out when the show transferred to Broadway. The song "The Guilty Ones" was added in its place. I like both songs, and I sort of wish they'd managed to keep this one in the lineup somewhere, because there's this reference in the show about how the four main characters used to "play pirates" together when they were kids, and it'd be kind of cool to have a song in there that relates to that...

ANYWAY. This particular audio of "There Once Was a Pirate" is rather fancypants, since it features Gavin Creel singing as the lead character Melchior; he was the original actor in the role (before Jonathan Groff), though he was only involved very early on in the process. He's currently starring in the 2009 revival of HAIR.

(PS: DO NOT BE ALARMED by the random outburst from Lea at the end of the song! For some reason, the person who uploaded the video decided to conclude it by splicing in a few seconds of a scene from the show.)

Behold, the splendor of The Little Mermaid on Broadway. Or more accurately, the splendor of Tituss Burgess, wearer of the Crab Hat and belter of the G#5.

Here is a link to a video of the song in full. It's almost worth watching just on mute for the costume fashions alone - JELLYFISH HOOPSKIRTS? - though a voice like Tituss's is a terrible thing to silence. (Also, the minute-long dance interlude from 2:16-3:25 is a bit less boring when you consider that the cast performing the choreography is on rollerskates.)

Chris Koza - View From a Pier

Fans of Andrew Bird will probably enjoy this one. (If you do like it, here's a video of it performed live.) I recently found Koza on last.fm, and while I'm not in love with every single song he's ever done, I do think that his new album, Exit Pesce, is definitely worth a listen. Three of my favorites by him are from that CD, and they'll probably pop up on here in future entries if I can work them in.

My fourth favorite, this song, is from his earlier album Patterns. For some reason, the sound of it and the lyric about a bombing (Wait I'm awake I'm awake I'm awake/I can hear the bombs dropping/I thought I was dreaming) make me think of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five -- the descriptions of WWII and Dresden, and the character Billy Pilgrim unstuck and adrift in time, going to sleep an old man and waking up back in his past as a young P.O.W. It's a pretty song, in any case.
