There she goes, polka dot dress...

Pennsylvania Polka Dress

Pennsylvania Polka Dress - Modcloth

✯ ✯ ✯

Moriarty - Jaywalker

Back from where the crowd rains cold
She's letting down the burden
Never doing what she's told
Living another Walden

Back to where the cats are kings
She knows it by the letter
All those nights and all those mornings
Running it down and
Under

There she goes, polkadot dress
Barefoot on the cobblestones
Where is she at, let's take a guess
Jaywalking in the streets of Rome

She's like a hotline
You can call whether rain or shine
When it looks like nothing is bright
A few words with her and you'll be allright

She is your chatter box
Writes you real letters
Oh roman goldilocks
She's some upsetter

There she goes, tropical cyclone
Barefoot on the cobblestones
Looking for Saint Jerome
Jaywalking in the streets of Rome

Picking up white owl feathers
She buries to keep safe
Drinking oil and loving cats
Gives her their purr and their scratch

Trees leaves and seashells will make her day
Words never come out in miscellaneous ways

Roaming along the gaps in the city
Greek goddess on the Campo dei fiori
Scarlet Doe in the middle of the Prairie
The feline can hear and feel and see

Finding time to be the passenger

Less than a week ago I ordered this necklace:

Tiny Fox Necklace - needle felted

Tiny Fox Necklace - motleymutton on Etsy

And it arrived in the mail very promptly, on Wednesday, and it is wonderful. I definitely recommend this shop - the necklaces are expensive ($35), but this is one impulse buy I definitely don't regret. It is too cute to regret. She does different kinds of animals, too, and does take custom orders: motleymutton.etsy.com

I have named the small vulpine sir "Gregory." He is my new friend. I love wearing this because every time I put it on, I feel like I am bringing a little companion along on my day-to-day adventures, which from his point of view is a combination of a field trip and one of those flying-chair rides at amusement parks. The commute to work seems a lot more exciting when thinking of it as seen through those itty-bitty black-bead fox eyes.

Do you want to see the world
Do you want to see the world
Do you want to see the world
In a different way?

The Kooks - See The World

Do you want to see the world
Do you want to see the world
Do you want to see the world
In a different way?

I remember how we used to sing
Writing poems in your bed
Finding time to be the passenger
But there you are, you never saw me leave

But there you go, you're sailing away
And you know you never come away
Yeah, but you should never lie to me
Yeah, but I will never come away
Yeah, but you should

But do you really want to see?
Oh, do you really want to see?
Oh, do you really want see?
On your television screen

I remember how we used to be
Without the world upon our TV
Well, let it lie or you can take it back
Wrap your life around evil's trap

But there you go, you're sailing away
But there you are
And you know you never come away

Yeah, but you should never lie to me
Yeah, but I will never come away
Yeah, but you should

Well, do you want to see the world?
(What, what?)
Do you want to see the world?
(What, what?)

Well, do you want to see the what?
(What, what?)
Well do you want to see the world?
(What, what, what?)

Well, do you want to see the world? I know I do
(What, what, what?)
Do you want to see the world? I know I do
(What, what, what?)

Well, do you really want to what, what?
I know I do
Well, do you really want to what, what?
I know I do

Well, do you really want to see?
I know I do, I know I do, I know I do

I picture myself flying

Superheroes Polaroid Necklace

Superheroes Polaroid Necklace - jerseymaids on Etsy

Another photographic necklace. (I swear this won't last the whole week.) Click on the image to see a larger view of the necklace's photo!

I really like all of Lauren Beacham (jerseymaids)'s polaroid jewelry. It's a nice concept, and I think her pieces come out looking sweetly crafty. My personal favorite of the current stock might be the simple Bokeh Village necklace, but I chose to feature "Superheroes" instead BECAUSE

1) I like it; out of the whole selection, I think this picture might be the most immediately intriguing, forgoing the prettiness of the nature shots for an image that seems to have more of a story to it. It reminds me a bit of how photography is used in A Softer World.

and

2) It also reminds me... of a song.

Krystal Harris - Supergirl

I'M SUPERGIRL
AND I'M HERE TO SAVE THE WORLD
BUT I WANNA KNOW
WHO'S GONNA SAVE ME???

A just-remembered gem in the sparkling popculture treasure trove of "THIS WAS TOTALLY AWESOME WHEN I WAS TWELVE." I can't be the only one who jammed to this in her tweenhood. Watching the video is a real trip, too -- gotta love the spiked hair and the awkward parade of promotional cameos for Disney's The Princess Diaries. O Anne Hathaway: what humble beginnings.

It's the crutch we spare / all our ailing friends

✯ ✯ ✯

The Decemberists - Summersong

Boats bobbing in the blue of the bay
In deep, far beneath, all the dead sailors
Slowly slipping to sleep...

...A bit of a morbid reference, maybe, but hey! Those sailors don't need their jackets anymore. :P Clothes are for the living.

Thus concludes BEACH WEEK at NYLONVINYL. I am sad to see it go, especially since I have a few more nautical items I wanted to show here. I hope nob reading (that is, neither of you) will object if I cram in their linked-up, clickable thumbnails!

He'll sail for a little...

ship

Ship - coffincrafts on Etsy

Another ship pendant, another etsy item. It's looking like a lot of these posts will get their clothing half from Etsy, but given that there's so many different stores within it (read: variety!) and they're all indie and could use whatever shoutouts they can get, I don't see much of a problem with that.

Spring Awakening 2001 Workshop - There Once Was a Pirate
(Sung by Lea Michele, Gavin Creel, and company)

My head's full of Spring Awakening today, and I'd been planning to work this entry into this Beach Week thing I'm doing anyway, so here you are. This is an early song that I think was still in the off-Broadway production of SA, but it was taken out when the show transferred to Broadway. The song "The Guilty Ones" was added in its place. I like both songs, and I sort of wish they'd managed to keep this one in the lineup somewhere, because there's this reference in the show about how the four main characters used to "play pirates" together when they were kids, and it'd be kind of cool to have a song in there that relates to that...

ANYWAY. This particular audio of "There Once Was a Pirate" is rather fancypants, since it features Gavin Creel singing as the lead character Melchior; he was the original actor in the role (before Jonathan Groff), though he was only involved very early on in the process. He's currently starring in the 2009 revival of HAIR.

(PS: DO NOT BE ALARMED by the random outburst from Lea at the end of the song! For some reason, the person who uploaded the video decided to conclude it by splicing in a few seconds of a scene from the show.)

Having a wonderful time!

If nautical nonsense is something you wish...BUY THESE EARRINGS! I mean heck, they're $3, expense is hardly an issue.

✯ ✯ ✯

Tiny Tim - Living in the Sunlight

This is a live performance of a song you may recognize... if you've ever watched the first episode of Spongebob Squarepants. (Here's a clip of the song as it's featured in the show.) MARVELOUS! I LOVE THIS MAN. HE BRIGHTENS MY WORLD.

Such wonderful things surround you!

✯ ✯ ✯

Tituss Burgess (and Chorus) - Under the Sea

Behold, the splendor of The Little Mermaid on Broadway. Or more accurately, the splendor of Tituss Burgess, wearer of the Crab Hat and belter of the G#5.

Here is a link to a video of the song in full. It's almost worth watching just on mute for the costume fashions alone - JELLYFISH HOOPSKIRTS? - though a voice like Tituss's is a terrible thing to silence. (Also, the minute-long dance interlude from 2:16-3:25 is a bit less boring when you consider that the cast performing the choreography is on rollerskates.)

A moment of reverent focus on the Crab Hat (and the man beneath it) will conclude today's entry:

Watch those ships as they go by

Pirate Ship Necklace - AscendingPeculiarity on Etsy

And so we have begun: Beach Week at NYLONVINYL. First up is this cute gold pendant of a clipper ship, complete with a little owl charm intently watching over its voyage. (And here's the honorary mention necklace for this entry, also nice but just a bit less photogenic.)

Chris Koza by Tim Carlson MPLS.

Chris Koza - View From a Pier

Fans of Andrew Bird will probably enjoy this one. (If you do like it, here's a video of it performed live.) I recently found Koza on last.fm, and while I'm not in love with every single song he's ever done, I do think that his new album, Exit Pesce, is definitely worth a listen. Three of my favorites by him are from that CD, and they'll probably pop up on here in future entries if I can work them in.

My fourth favorite, this song, is from his earlier album Patterns. For some reason, the sound of it and the lyric about a bombing (Wait I'm awake I'm awake I'm awake/I can hear the bombs dropping/I thought I was dreaming) make me think of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five -- the descriptions of WWII and Dresden, and the character Billy Pilgrim unstuck and adrift in time, going to sleep an old man and waking up back in his past as a young P.O.W. It's a pretty song, in any case.

Oh, heave ho

Okay, I've been bad about keeping the blogger NV up to date with the livejournal NV (yes, it's on LJ now too!), but now we're caught up with crossposting! Hooray! Haha it's not like anyone still follows it on here, but whatever. Here's today's entry:

I was out of town sans laptop this weekend, so to make up for skipping posts the past three days, here is an extravaganza!

The Louise Brooks Dress

The Louise Brooks Dress - Thrush on Etsy

Just a nice, simple white dress at first glance, but could be a valuable fashion staple for summer. I think it'd be versatile for lots of different styles depending on how you accessorize it, but would lend itself especially well to being the base for a nautical look. (And note the awesome huge pockets!! Perfect for a stroll on the beach.)

Here are some accessories for the seaside theme! All found on Etsy.

And the song to wrap it all up:

The Joe Iconis Rock & Roll Jamboree - Last on Land
(Written by Joe Iconis, performed by Jason SweetTooth Williams & company;
Spring Awakening fans reading may notice Krysta Rodriguez in there, starting around 4:00.)

I was at this Jamboree and this song was a definite highlight! :) An exciting early peek at a new Iconis musical in the works, Spaghetti Western.

Beck - Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime
(A cover of The Korgis; their versions here (older - the original?) and here (a little later in the 80s, a lot more synth))

Re-watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind tonight (^footage featured in video above), remembered that I love this song. I really should try rekindling my junior high romance with Beck.

Tomorrow when we walk in the cold...

Antique Blue Rose Tights
Antique Blue Rose Tights - Modcloth

These remind me of Tennessee Wiliams' play The Glass Menagerie. ("I said I had pleurosis -- you thought I said Blue Roses. That's what you always called me after that!") -- They look like something that Laura would wear, too.

Shuffle Your Feet - Marla Hansen

No video for this one, but it's lovely. I can't get enough of it. (Tidbit: Through googling, I have discovered that Marla has played with Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond, Duncan Sheik, Kanye West and Jay-Z, among others. Make what you will of that curious assortment.)

THINGS TO RUIN - The War Song

(Written by Joe Iconis, performed by Lance Rubin)

Had two other songs come to mind for this one, but I think I'll save them for other military jacket posts in the future. Because there will be others. I'm a sucker for the Sgt. Pepper look.
